I am learning more and more about a topic that is very powerful – a topic known as “Non-Negotiables.” I was listening to a podcast episode recently and the guest speaker discussed non-negotiables that he had in his life. As I listened, he really sent the vibe of “A holistic life is all about harmony—nurturing your physical health, emotional well-being, social connections, and sense of purpose.” Non-negotiables are the guardrails that ensure you don’t skimp on what keeps you whole. They’re not selfish; they’re essential. By setting these non-negotiable habits or boundaries, you’re telling yourself (and the world), “My well-being matters.” Studies, like one from Psychological Science (2024), show that prioritizing self-care routines boosts resilience and reduces stress. So, let’s explore five non-negotiables that can elevate your mental health and keep your holistic life in sync!
1. Sleep Like You Mean It
Non-Negotiable: 7-8 hours of quality sleep every night, no exceptions. I don’t mean to be “unconscious”, I mean sleep deeply! Get into REM sleep! Your brain deserves a nightly vacation, and skimping on sleep is like canceling its flight. Make a consistent bedtime routine—think cozy pajamas, no screens, and maybe a lavender-scented pillow—your sacred ritual.
