New Years Resolutions

Hey Friends, welcome back.  Happy new year.  Today I want to summarize some of the blog posts that have been discussed throughout the last year and how they can be used to set small, but reasonable resolutions for this year.  Often times when I hear of resolutions for the new year there is a lot of focus on things like new year, new me or getting healthy, going back to the gym and other things that can be really big goals.  Although I appreciate big goals and new years resolutions, I think the easiest ones to maintain are the ones that start smaller and feel more manageable.  The best type of resolutions are ones that are personal to you and that you feel are going to benefit your life.  Much like therapy, if we don’t have buy in it is hard to sustain real change.

Based on some of the blog posts we covered over the last year here are some ideas I have collected on different resolutions to consider for the new year.

1. Practice gratitude.  This can include starting a gratitude journal, sharing positives about your day with another person, or looking more for the good or the “gift” in things that happen everyday.

2. Improve sleep.  This can include establishing a better sleep schedule, limiting distractions like tv or screens at night, doing calming practices like drinking tea or taking a shower, and creating a more calming sleep environment.

3. Improve an aspect of health.  This could include mental health, gut health, emotional health, or physical health.  Making a change in diet, increasing exercise, eliminating inflammatory foods, seeking therapy, or learning coping skills are examples.

4. Practice mindfulness.  This can include breathing exercises, exploring the five senses, and grounding exercises like putting your feet in the earth.                 Considering small steps to take at the beginning of the year can help establish change in sustainable ways.  If there is an area of your life you are wanting to improve, why not now? As always we are here to help.

Until next time, thanks for reading.
